Lin is three, and she is always curious.
She is curious about the earth, because the earth is Mama’s home. That doesn’t make much sense to her, because they have a very nice house and Lin likes to hear the vibrations of her stomps echo down the long wooden hallways, but Mama says that the earth is her home. Lin just agrees, because Mama is always right, and she happily sprawls on the ground and takes the earth into her small hands. She cups it loosely, allowing the dirt to fall through the cracks between her fingers but keeping every rock and stone in her grasp. She inspects each of them for holes and bumps and describes them aloud to her mother. She thinks it’s a fun sort of game; Mama thinks so too, because she always smiles when they play it together.
